Ballantyne Scoop Movie Reviews | Robin Hood

Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, Kate Blanchette and William Hurt. This is at least the fifth time this classic story has been on the big screen. If you have seen the previous films you will not recognize most of the story. Robin Hood turns outlaw to oppose the tyranny of the king. His love interest, Maid Marion is played by Kate Blanchette. Other cameos are the Sheriff of Nottingham, Friar Tuck and Little John.

The story is set in England in the year 1199. The scenes are dark visually and emotionally. The audience does not get the feeling they want to cheer the hero as in prior films. Russell Crowe is a fine actor but we felt he was playing the Gladiator in a new costume. Maid Marion is a Thirteen Century woman’s libber.

The film was anything but uplifting. Too dark a story and too dark visually. I rated the film 3 1/2 out of 5 for an action film. An interesting thing, I checked the critics on several sites. The critics liked it better than the viewers.
