Ballanyne, NC – The Learning Rx, a brain training center on Pineville-Matthews Road that works with both children and adults, is taking part in the fundraising campaign of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Dr. Vicki Parker of Learning Rx speaks about the emerging field of brain training and what she does at her center.
Dr. Parker is working with Caleb Howard, a 19 year-old student who receives brain training. He is in remission from leukemia and received two years of chemotherapy and radiation during middle school. He receives brain training to lessen the aftereffects of his leukemia treatment. Very few people realize that cancer treatment can create cognitive difficulties long after treatment is over.
The Ballantyne Scoop stopped by The Learning Rx and spoke to Dr. Vicki Parker and was able to view a session she had with Caleb Howard. Looking at Caleb Howard today and you’d never guess how the Leukemia that coursed through his blood seven years ago still affects him now.
At 19, he’s tall, blonde, and social. But in fifth grade, “I was tired all the time. I’d fall asleep randomly,” he recalls. Following his diagnosis, he endured two years of radiation and chemotherapy. He’s been in remission since then, but the Leukemia has followed him in unexpected ways.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be hosting a gala event on May 15 at the Ballantyne Hotel. For more information you can call Dr. Vicki Parker at 704-541-1373 or email at vparker@learningrx.net
